New TV Campaign Promotes Credit Union Loans

12/17/2012
HARRISBURG – Purchasing a new home, paying college tuition, buying a car, financing a small business – all dreams of many Americans. Everyday, credit unions help their members fulfill these dreams. In a series of new TV and radio commercials, Pennsylvanians will hear that credit unions are financial service providers that provide loans to fund their goals. As cooperatives, credit unions in Pennsylvania have joined together, along with its state advocacy group, the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association (PCUA), to develop and run the spots promoting the credit union difference. The cost of creating the ads was paid for by Pacul Services, Inc., the PCUA’s Service Corporation.

“For more than 80 years, credit unions have provided affordable financial services to members in Pennsylvania. However, there are many Pennsylvanians who do not know that they can use the products and services offered by credit unions,” said PCUA Chairman and Sun East Federal Credit Union CEO Michael Kaczenski. “Credit unions are one of the best kept secrets and we are looking to tell others all about the benefits of belonging,” said Kaczenski.

As non-profits, credit unions are able to provide consumers with lower low rates on loans and lower or no fees compared to traditional banking institutions. Research indicates that Pennsylvanians who are members of credit unions save an average of $66 per member or $126 per member household annually. Statewide, this equates to more than $241 million in direct financial benefits to the state’s 3.6 million members during the twelve months ending June 2012. Unfortunately, there are millions of Pennsylvanians that are not saving money because they are not a member of a credit union.

“I’m pleased that credit unions across the state have joined together in this campaign to promote the credit union movement,” says PCUA President/CEO Jim McCormack. “Our goal with the ads is to inform consumers that credit unions are the best option for loans and to promote awareness about the benefits of membership. Not everyone can join every credit union, but there is a credit union for everyone,” said McCormack.

Consumers seeking a credit union will be directed to iBelong.org, a website that features the campaign spots, facts about credit unions, and most importantly, an online locator. The campaign is a cooperative effort on the part of credit unions operating in Pennsylvania via the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association.

Credit unions are non-profit financial cooperatives that provide affordable financial services to help their owner/members.  The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association, based in Harrisburg, provides legislative, professional development, and operational support and services for more than 400 credit unions in Pennsylvania.  These credit unions have assets of $30 billion and serve more than three million members.
