Pennsylvania Credit Unions Host Reality Fair - Pittsburgh
Teenagers take drivers education to learn how to drive, but many will graduate high school without ever receiving a single financial education course. In an effort to educate high school students on basic budgeting and money management skills, 10 credit unions and the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation will hold a REAL Solutions Financial Reality Fair at the CCAC Boyce, CCAC North and Westmoreland Community College campuses on October 15, 16, and 17. More than 575 students from 17 high schools will go through the paces of making day-to-day financial decisions acting as independent adults.
Financial Reality Fairs are a practical exercise in personal financial management and help prepare students for navigating life on their own as adults. In preparation, students choose an occupation that genuinely interests them and research its salary. From there, they make living choices such as housing, transportation, food and clothing, insurance, entertainment, and other categories within a realistic budget. Following their selections, students meet with financial counselors who review their budget results and consult with them on possible adjustments they may need to make.
“For many years, credit unions have been providing financial education in classrooms, workplaces, and communities,” said Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Joe Wambach. “The Reality Fair complements classroom studies to help prepare young people for financial success when they get out into the real world.”
“The Financial Reality Fair is a wonderful opportunity to help students learn to plan before they spend their money. It is much easier to learn good spending habits than it is to recover from bad spending habits.” said Dave Ackerman, CEO, U$X Federal Credit Union.
The Reality Fair is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Credit Union Foundation, along with the support and volunteers from the following credit unions:
Allegheny-Kiski Postal FCU, Ambridge Area FCU, Armstrong Associates FCU, C C A C FCU, Century Heritage FCU, Clearview FCU, Derry Area FCU, First Energy FCU, Franklin Regional Schools FCU, Greater Latrobe Schools FCU, Greensburg Chapter of Credit Unions, HealthCare First CU, Latrobe FCU, Lesco FCU, Norwin Teachers FCU, OMEGA FCU, Parkview Community FCU, Pittsburgh Central FCU, Stanwood Area FCU, U$X FCU, Valley 1st Community FCU, WEST-AIRCOMM FCU, Westco FCU, Westho FCU, Westmoreland Community FCU, and Westmoreland Water FCU.
