Strategic Planning Services
Planning for Your Success
The Pennsylvania Credit Union Association offers credit unions a variety of Planning and Development services.
These services include Strategic Planning, Business Planning, and Charter Expansion and Charter Conversion services.
Benefits of Strategic Planning
The primary focus of our department is to help credit unions succeed through Strategic Planning. Strategic Planning has several benefits, including:
Direction
A well-developed Strategic Plan allows the credit union to identify goals and objectives over the short and medium term (one to three years). It is important that the board, management and staff recognize and work together in reaching the credit union’s objectives.
Compliance
In recent years, regulators have stressed the importance of developing a formal, written strategic plan. The plan should serve as a guideline for management and the board and allow the regulators to understand what credit unions are trying to accomplish.
Education
Both the credit union board and management will gain additional insight from a credit union financial and peer analysis. This often results in a greater awareness of their particular responsibilities to the credit union, and especially in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the individual credit union.
Morale
A planning session presents the perfect forum for credit union staff and volunteers to share their unique viewpoints and become a part of the credit union’s overall success. A well-developed, well-communicated plan can improve morale and relationships within your credit union.
Commitment
When staff and volunteers mutually agree on credit union goals, they become easily attainable. A major goal of the strategic planning session is to gain a consensus on the direction of the credit union. Once the direction is identified, and everyone is "on board," the commitment to success is established.
Productivity
Defined goals and action plans improve staff efficiency, and free up management’s time to focus on long-term plans and improving service to your members.

Business Planning
Our experience has shown that Planning Consultants will be asked to provide these services as a result of a Strategic Planning session. After establishing goals and objectives, a written operational plan will be provided. This plan will include budget projections to ensure success and allow for monthly evaluation by management staff and the board.
The Association’s Business Planning Service offers a comprehensive plan that identifies not only the plans of the credit union, but the challenges and obstacles that credit unions are facing in an ever-changing, competitive environment.
Business Planning allows management staff to focus on strategic issues. Business Planning is available in conjunction with Strategic Planning or on an individual basis.
Charter Expansion and Charter Conversion
Credit unions interested in Charter Expansion or Charter Conversion may wish to consider utilizing the experience of an Association Planning Consultant to expedite the process.
It has been our experience that the approval process for charter expansions or conversions can be a very time consuming process. An Association Planning Consultant can assist your credit union in completing the charter expansion or charter conversion package for approval by NCUA or Pennsylvania Department of Banking.
Your Association has developed core competencies in these areas. We have established working relationships with the appropriate regulators to make the process go smoothly.
