Complying with NCUA Regulations on Information Security & Risk Assessment
The security of member information is an ongoing process that must be maintained and adjusted. Credit unions must establish a security program to protect customer records and information from both internal and external thefts. The safeguards are intended to:
- Insure the security and confidentiality of customer records and information;
- Protect against any anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of such records; and
- Protect against any unauthorized access to or use of such records or information that would result in substantial harm or inconvenience to any customer.
As new threats evolve in this increasingly technical world, credit unions must continue to identify and evaluate risks to its information, develop a plan to mitigate the risks, implement the plan, test the plan, and monitor the need to update the plan.
NCUA Examiners will guide you through a discussion on Regulation 748, Appendices A and B. They will give you guidelines on how to conduct a risk assessment to ensure your credit union is following best practices to prevent threats or hazards to the security of your credit union and your members.
Speakers: NCUA Examiners Dan Popp (East) and Lynsey Johnson (West). Both Dan and Lynsey specialize in review of information technology and security of these systems. |
