Collaboration Corner
Success Story: Credit unions come together at local dealership!

collaborate

N.M.H. FCU and INCOL CU of the Wyoming Valley/Scranton Chapter’s small credit unions held a joint car sale on January 16 at Bonner Chevrolet in Kingston.

CEO’s Deb Mozal and Deb Peters joined forces on the showroom floor, offered their credit union services (including great auto loan rates!), along with fresh baked cookies to interested buyers.

Results: One new member and two new loans totaling $47,000! A great start. But it didn't end there. Discounted rates were offered through the end of January and both credit unions are thrilled with the end result: more than doubling their loan volume of the previous month.

Are you part of a formal or informal credit union alliance? We'd love to hear from you and share successes in subsequent issues of SCUNet News.  Please send your information to rick.myxter@pcua.org

Compliance Q&A

Q: I heard someone at the Chapter Meeting mention that they were able to purchase some supplies for the credit union without paying tax. Is this possible?

A: Yes, credit unions are exempt from all taxes imposed by the United States or by any state, territorial, or local taxing authority, except for local real estate or personal property tax.

    Letter of explanation

Keep in mind some hotels and vendors may not accept the PA Tax Exemption form, in which case your CU must advocate strongly for it’s tax exempt status.

Additionally, credit unions should complete a Pennsylvania Tax Exemption form REV-1220 AS and show this when making purchases for the credit union. Check box #2 and insert “Purchaser is a/an Credit Union.” Credit unions do not have a tax exempt number.
